In a decisive move to expand into widescreen video and living-room entertainment, Meta-owned Instagram has officially begun testing “Features”—a dedicated horizontal (16:9 landscape) long-form video format permitting uploads of up to 90 minutes.
Announced by Instagram Head Adam Mosseri and Product Chief Tessa Lyons, the format represents Meta’s most calculated offensive against YouTube since the sunset of IGTV. Rather than attempting to force vertical video into full-length consumption, Instagram is embracing standard widescreen orientation for extended content, specifically targeting full-length podcasts, investigative documentaries, comedy specials, masterclasses, and episodic series.

1. The Symbiotic Funnel: Linking Reels to Features
A core limitation of past long-form experiments was the friction of discovering hour-long content inside a fast-paced vertical feed. Instagram is solving this through an integrated Reel-to-Feature bridge:
- Clips as Reels: Creators can upload up to eight short vertical teaser Reels linked directly to a master 90-minute horizontal Feature.
- Zero Platform Friction: When a user encounters a high-interest podcast clip or interview snippet in their Reels feed, a prominent “Watch full video” prompt allows them to rotate their device into full landscape mode and stream the entire production without leaving Instagram.
- Series Categorization: Alongside Features, Instagram is rolling out “Series”, enabling creators to organize episodic multi-part documentaries and educational modules into sequential playlists on their profile tabs.
2. The Living Room Push: Expanding Instagram for TV
Instagram is simultaneously expanding its dedicated Instagram for TV application across Samsung Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV.
By enabling seamless cross-device synchronization, a viewer can save a 90-minute interview discovered on their smartphone during a morning commute and resume watching it on their 4K living-room television in the evening, utilizing their phone as a playback remote. This brings Meta into direct competition with YouTube’s fastest-growing segment: connected television (CTV) watch time.
3. Strategic Implications for Consultancies & Knowledge Creators
For professional consultancies, corporate agencies, and educational authorities—including legal, immigration, and educational firms—the rollout of Features transforms social media lead generation:
- In-Depth Case Studies & Masterclasses: Complex subjects (such as European visa pathways, immigration jurisprudence, and economic analyses) no longer have to be oversimplified into 60-second soundbites.
- Higher Audience Retention: Creators can leverage the viral, algorithmic distribution of short Reels to capture top-of-funnel reach, while funneling high-intent clients directly into detailed 45-to-90-minute institutional webinars and breakdown videos.
- Brand Authority: Long-form production values establish deeper institutional credibility, enabling firms to host episodic discussions, client interviews, and consular briefings directly within a single ecosystem
